Monochromatic Pages

Decided to do two pages today. One in my regular art journal, and one in the monster journal.

I started with the monster journal. I wanted to draw the monster you see in the dark, at the foot of your bed when you’re half asleep. You can’t see the monster’s face, but you know it will be terrible.

The monster page was done in charcoal and Golden acrylic carbon black paint.

Then, to lighten things up a bit, I did the flower page. I didn’t want to add colours though, so I stuck to a black and white pallette.

The background was done in layers of Golden Carbon Black and Liquitex Titanium White, swirled on top of each other. Then I added the flower.

Little Monsters

I bought a new journal today specifically for drawing monsters. These ones are quick sketches, a little cartoony, but fun. I plan on filling this journal up with different monger in different styles.

Materials Used:

  • Staedtler triplus fineliner black pen
  • Staedtler 2H pencil
  • Generals charcoal
  • Faber-Castell pitt oil based pencil
  • Progresso sky blue pencil

Charcoal Egg and Other Stuff Materials

Here is the link to today’s arting.

I did more charcoal and, while the dark shading worked, I find myself looking at the highlights and thinking it could use more work.

This was very straightforward. Generals 5B Charcoal in my 300 Series Strathmore 9″ X 12″ journal.

The other stuff was a bit more complicated. I took a bookbinding basics class today, put on by a member of CBBAG (pronounced cabbage, which I think is too cute). We learned 2 basic stitches, pamphlet and a line stitch. We also learned a few different knots used and made a book cradle. This journal, is the end result of a full day of learning and making.

I made a few mistakes on it but I learned lots and can’t wait to make my next one.

I also made myself a bracelet. I’ve been looking at a lot of handmade beads lately and it made me dig out my stash and make something (I’m a terrible crafter – I don’t make, I hoard).

 Copper and lampworked beads.

Charcoal Portrait Thoughts

Here is the post for today’s 366 Days of Art piece.  Playing around with charcoal in my 300 Series Strathmore Drawing Journal. I was trying to get the shading around her face right. I think it turned out better than before and I’m sure the more I practice, the better it will get. I look forward to this time next year to see how far I’ve come.

Charcoal Still Thoughts

Still working on it. Not caring about the shape (yes, the bowl is wonky) so much as getting the sketching and shading down.
I think it’s coming along.

Materials Used:

  • 300 Series Strathmore 9″ X 12″ Drawing Journal
  • Primo 5B Charcoal
  • Pranc 3B Drawing Pencil
  • Faber-Castell White Eraser and Perfection Pencil Eraser with Brush

Walking in a Fog Materials

As I said in the 366 Days of Art post here, it’s been a weird day. I know part of it is due to the fact that I couldn’t sleep last night. A lot of people have said the same thing. We’re all blaming the weather pressure changes.

In the meantime, we’re all walking around like this.

Materials Used:

  • 300 Series Strathmore Drawing Pad
  • Conte 2B Graphite Pencil
  • Generals Charcoal 2B
  • Generals Charcoal White
  • Faber-Castell Pitt Oil Based Pencil
  • Derwent Inktense Dusky Purple Pencil

I had a lot of fun drawing this out. It’s so relaxing to pick up a pencil and sketch. Things might not turn out 100%, and the final piece might not look anything like what you imagined when you sat down, but as long as you enjoyed the journey, it’s all worthwhile. I know personally I need to practice drawing more. Focus on symmetry, shading, and proportion. I will work on these but in the meantime I’m not going to beat myself up if things don’t turn out 100%.

Materials Used:

  • 11″x14″ Strathmore 300 Series Drawing Pad
  • Pranc 3B Drawing Pencil
  • Faber Castell Pitt Oil Based Pencils in Sanguine 112920, and Soft Black 112602
  • Generals Charcoal 557 4B Soft
  • Generals Charcoal White 558
  • Masters Paper Stump
  • Crayola Pencils in Peach and Magenta
  • Derwent Inktense in Dusky Purple 0730, and Spring Green 1550
  • Kylon Crystal Clear spray

*All materials except for the drawing pad and the Crayolas came from The Paint Spot*

This took me about an hour and was photographed with my iPhone 6.

Lastly, I just wanted to say about my supplies… Yes I’m using Crayola Pencil Crayons. Why? Because they’re what I have currently. Maybe, one day, when I can afford it, I will get myself an amazing set of high end pencil crayons, but for now, I’ll make do with these.
